Congratulations to New Works Lab Playwrights Stephen Karam and Dael Orlandersmith, who both received awards at the annual Dramatists Guild’s awards presentations February 22nd!
Dael Orlandersmith is the recipient of the 2016 Flora Roberts Award, which awards distinguished work in theater and encourages the dramatist’s continuation of that work. Stephen Karam received the guild’s new Horton Foote Playwriting Award, which was created in honor of Oscar-winning, Pulitzer Prize-winning and Tony-nominated playwright Horton Foote and grants $25,000 to a dramatist whose work “seeks to plumb the ineffable nature of being human,” an apt description for a playwright whose current work on Broadway is titled The Humans.
Stephen Karam wrote Emma for the Waterwell Drama Program’s New Works Lab in 2011, a model musical re-interpretation of the Jane Austen classic. Pultizer finalist and Obie Award Winner Dael Orlandersmith is the playwright for this season’s New Works Lab piece, Some of the Things Inside. The workshop production will premiere at the PPAS auditorium on April 13th through April 16th, and the Drama Class of 2016 will also present a benefit performance at Joe’s Pub on April 18th.
